Rhythm Mechanics 2010 03-08 – All hands on the mixer

I’m back in action for another groovy set this week, this one does not disappoint. With some pre-show prep and some clever mixer/looping usage I kept the energy up through this deep house mix. The track selection here was some of my better work, expect this show, or parts of it anyways, to transform into a promo mix in the next week or so. In other news, I’ll be playing an extra internet radio show this month. Karl Almaria has invited me to come play on the Sunday Brunchlox on myhouse-yourhouse.net! I’ll be playing alongside Karl and DJ Remedy from noon to 4 on Sunday the 21st of March. Get excited for the show, and jealous that you won’t be there in person to enjoy the food :-) Enjoy this mix for now, I’ll catch you later!

Rhythm Mechanics 03-01-2010 // Spatula City and Flapjack Tribute

So last week you may remember we had the Chicago Jack Summit going on… we raised $1000 and we’re going to pick up a set of CDJ-1000′s for the studio. Big thanks to everyone who donated during the show, or just to WNUR’s Phoneathon in general. A large part of the reason we got to our goal was a result of the support of Frankie J (The Sound Republic), proprietor of Spatula City and Flapjack Records. Since he has been such a team player in the house community by supporting WNUR and just generally putting out AWESOME music on his labels, I decided it would be right to return the favor. Thus we arrive at this set, which was comprised entirely of tracks off of Spatula City and Flapjack. Use this set as a guide to the new sound of Chicago House… because now you know who’s pushing it.

My Intro Tracks

So a couple people have emailed me asking what my intro track is over the course of this show, so I figured I would do a little report about it.

Over the summer of 2008, I started every show and did my talk-in bit to “Flutter” by Bonobo. I liked this track because it was happy but smooth, with a decent beat. Generally it made for a good background vibe and had nice fade in fade out sections that I could work with.

Then in the fall, I switched it up to a track called “Conflict Resolution” by Joey Youngman, off the Chillout Session OM Records put out in 2008. I liked this because I felt it was a good mix of a hip hop beat and a relaxed deep house atmosphere. I still toss this on once in a while if I have people over and want to match the mood.

This is the new track that will open the show for Winter 2009, it’s called “Off Kilter” by Tipper. It’s a lot different than the other two, way dirtier and grungier, but keeps that hip-hop meets some kind of house music feel on it. I may find myself cue-ing and dropping the track at about 20 seconds just to have a harder intro, but we’ll see.

You’ll always have a hot intro track to look forward to playing underneath my dumb ass talking in on the show, guaranteed. If you have any suggestions for a new intro track, I’d love to check it out!

Cheers,

D-VO

Rock N’ Roll Could Never Ever Hip-Hop Like This…

Classic track from The Pharcyde… You may recognize the sample at the beginning from a recent mashup album. This track is very smooth, and then just straight up jumps off around the 3:30 mark. Good listen, and I recommend the album.
